What Is a Mezuzah Case, and What's Inside It?
A mezuzah is made of two separate parts: the klaf — a small parchment scroll handwritten by a certified sofer with verses from the Shema — and the case, which holds and protects it on the doorpost. The case itself isn't the mitzvah; it's the vessel. Most mezuzah cases, including ours, are sold without a klaf, since the scroll is a separate, individually certified purchase. If you don't already have one, ask a rabbi or a trusted Judaica supplier for a kosher klaf sized to fit your case.
What Size Case Do You Need?
Mezuzah cases are sized to the klaf inside them, most commonly between 10 and 15 cm for a standard doorframe. Measure your scroll (or confirm the size you plan to buy) before choosing a case — a klaf that's too long will have to be folded, which many authorities consider less than ideal. Our own cases run 13 cm and 16 cm, suited to standard interior and entrance doors.
Which Material Should You Choose?
Material is mostly a question of where the mezuzah will hang and what look you want:
- Sterling silver — the classic choice for an entrance door or a piece meant to last for generations. Solid and formal, it darkens slightly with age unless polished.
- Wood — warmer and more casual, well suited to interior doors and bedrooms.
- Outdoor placement in a very hot or rainy climate favors sealed metal over wood or resin, which can warp over time.
Where and How Is a Mezuzah Affixed?
The traditional placement is on the right doorpost as you enter, tilted with the top leaning inward, on the upper third of the doorframe. A blessing is recited before affixing the first mezuzah in a home; if you're hanging several at once, one blessing with the intention to cover them all is customary. Because practices vary slightly by community, it's worth checking placement and blessing details with your rabbi if this is your first time.
The Kameart Mezuzah Collection
Each of our cases is handmade in sterling silver 925 in our Tel Aviv atelier, in small runs rather than mass-produced. Two are new this year:
- The Aesh Sheli mezuzah carries Rabbi Nachman of Breslev's flame — "my fire will burn until Mashiach comes" — engraved along its arch-topped case.
- The hammered Star of David mezuzah pairs a dimpled, hand-hammered silver texture with an engraved Magen David at its center.
Both are designed to hold a standard klaf, and ship worldwide by DHL, fully tracked. You can browse the full range in our mezuzah case collection.
